The International Air Services Commission (the Commission) has received an application from Qantas seeking an allocation of three (3) frequencies per week on the Sri Lanka route. From 25 August 2026, Qantas’ wholly-owned subsidiary, Jetstar, plans to launch services between Melbourne and Colombo.
Qantas has requested the capacity on the following basis:
- the allocation is requested for a period of five years from the date of the Determination;
- the capacity will be fully utilised by 30 September 2026;
- the capacity may be utilised by Qantas, Jetstar or another Australian carrier which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Qantas Group; and
- the capacity may be used by Qantas to provide joint services with any wholly-owned subsidiary and by any wholly-owned subsidiary of the Qantas Group to provide joint services with Qantas.
Invitation for other applications
In accordance with section 12 of the International Air Services Commission Act 1992, the Commission invites other applications for capacity on the route. The closing date for making an application is 2 January 2026.
Update: 06-March-2026
On 5 March 2026, the Commission issued Determination [2026] IASC 101 allocating to Qantas three frequencies per week on the Sri Lanka route, subject to certain conditions. The determination is valid for five years from 5 March 2026.
